Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is an infection of the gums and the structures that support the teeth. It starts as gingivitis and can progress to periodontitis, which can cause tooth loss if not treated.
The main cause is a build-up of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth. Risk factors include poor oral hygiene, smoking, certain health conditions, and genetic susceptibility.
Symptoms can include bleeding gums when brushing or flossing, swelling or redness of the gums, persistent bad breath, gums pulling away from the teeth, or teeth feeling loose.
In its early stage (gingivitis), gum disease can often be fully treated, and the gums can return to health. In more advanced stages (periodontitis), treatment can control the condition and prevent further damage, but existing damage to bone and supporting tissues cannot usually be reversed.
